Get Outside and Get Moving

Well summer is finally here. School s out and the kids are happy. I wish your family a great summer and hope that it is also a healthy and productive summer. Here s a little something to think about for both parents and kids.

I just finished a nice walk this morning. What a great day! As I was coming home on my walk I went past the little park that is right across the street from my house. It was well past 10 o clack in the morning and not a kid to see anywhere in the park. Wow, how times have changed.

When I was a kid, and I know that s been a while ago, but we lived outside all day long. I also know that when I was a kid there was not a rampant epidemic of obesity among children. Kids back then were good at using their imaginations to come up with things that they could do to occupy their time. We could even do it on our own without a coach or an adult to supervise.

So what s happened? I know that everything changes, but are all the changes for the better and do we have to go along with what everyone else is doing as a family or as parents? Computers have taken over our world. Video games have come along and provided an opportunity for our children to sit idly and occupy themselves with unneeded stimulation. Their creativity is provided for them by a machine and they don t have to call on their imagination nearly as much to come up with their own energy, excitement, and passion.

So what s the message today and hopefully for this summer?

Get Outside and Get Moving

Fresh air, sunshine, a chance to play with your buddies, and a chance to use your creative mind to come up with some fun and new things. It s a tried and true formula and it can serve all of you young people well this summer.

Be sure to sprinkle in lots of movement and exercise too so that you can have fun, full summer days and sleep like a rock as soon as your head hits the pillow. Activity creates excitement and keeps your mind and body strong. Make it a point to get off of the couch and get away from that tv and computer screen.
